After years of speculation and false dawns, it has finally been confirmed that Bad Santa 2 will begin shooting in the New Year ready for a 2016 release.
It is of course the sequel to the hugely popular 2003 movie and will once again star Billy Bob Thornton who reprises his role as Willie Soke. Miramax and Broad Green Pictures will co-finance and co-produce the picture which will have a theatrical release during the 2016 holiday season.
“We’ve been waiting far too long to see Billy Bob’s Willie Soke mess with the holiday season in his own unique way,” said Zanne Devine, Miramax’s EVP of Film & TV.
“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Billy Bob, the entire creative and producing team, and Broad Green and Sierra/Affinity to bring back the outrageous humour and characters that made this movie brand iconic in the first place.” he added.
Broad Green Pictures’ CCO Daniel Hammond said: “We are excited to bring this memorable character and new chapter back to the big screen.”
Principal photography on Bad Santa 2 will commence in Montreal, Canada, in January although little else is known about the movie at this time. It’s also unclear of any other members of the original cast will return for the second instalment.
Bad, Bad Santa
The original movie followed the story of conman Willie Stoke and his partner who pose as a department store Santa Claus and his Little Helper each Christmas. The aim; to rob the very stores in which they work on Christmas Eve.
However, they run in to some issues after Willie befriends a troubled local child. The store security are also on to their plan. Oh, and Willie also has some addictions to get in top of, not least alcohol and sex.
It won’t surprise you to hear, this is not considered a family movie. Instead, it’s an adult Christmas comedy, and an incredibly entertaining one at that. It brought in well over $75million at the Box Office after its 2003 launch and it will be hoped the sequel will do likewise.
